Businesses, groups and individuals are invited to adopt a planter on Worthing seafront

Would you like to create your own community garden on Worthing seafront?

Worthing Borough Council is offering businesses, community groups, charities and individuals in the area the chance to plant out their own space on the promenade this summer.

Thousands of residents and visitors flock to Worthing seafront every summer and the Council wants to ensure the area is looking its best by inviting local businesses and groups to design and decorate the flower beds that adorn the promenade.

The annual planting of the seafront flower beds was successfully coordinated for many years by Worthing Town Centre Initiative and the Worthing Journal, before the Council’s Coastal Office team took on the job for the first time last year.

This year the Council would like to see more local businesses, community groups and charities help create a green corridor along the promenade by adopting a seafront planter.

The Council’s grounds maintenance team have been busy readying the planters with fresh soil in preparation for a planting day in June. All of the plants will be supplied by the Council for free and staff from the Coastal Office and Highdown Gardens will be on hand to offer a helping hand.

Volunteers will be free to get creative with their planters by incorporating eye-catching art, handmade objects or found items into their designs. This year, the Council will also be offering volunteers the chance to have a small name plate on their planter to let people know who is responsible for each design.

Anyone interested in designing a planter will need to commit to maintaining it throughout the year with weeding and watering. Grounds maintenance staff will also be helping to look after the planters throughout the summer to keep them looking their best.

A Council spokesperson said:

“Each year the colourful and imaginative planter designs add life to the seafront and provide a great chance for local groups and businesses to help ensure the town looks welcoming to residents and visitors.

“The annual planting day can also provide a fantastic team building experience as well as the chance to network with other groups and businesses in the area.”
